VPN Shutdowns In India: How New Laws Can Affect Your Privacy – Forbes

For VPN providers, the major crux of their decision to close their India servers is the law’s requirement that VPNs, data centers and other cloud services maintain records of customer names, IP addresses and other sensitive information. Keeping these logs would violate many of the privacy policies that these services have in place. While the original law was supposed to take effect in June, the date for implementation has been pushed back to September 25.

In June, NordVPN shut down its servers in India, as well as TunnelBear, ExpressVPN and other industry heavyweights. The decision to shut down servers in India appears to be just as much of a protest of the new law as it is a practical measure. In a fiery blog post from earlier in the year, ExpressVPN directly criticized the new regulation:

“The law is also overreaching and so broad as to open up the window for potential abuse. We believe the damage done by potential misuse of this kind of law far outweighs any benefit that lawmakers claim would come from it. ExpressVPN refuses to participate in the Indian government’s attempts to limit internet freedom.”
