ExpressVPN Launches First Hardware Wi-Fi 6 Router With Built-In VPN Protection – Forbes

The new Aircove router has VPN built in straight out of the box. You still need to subscribe to … [+] ExpressVPN’s service, but this solution makes it easier to cover and protect a whole home network.

ExpressVPN

Since 2008, ExpressVPN has been helping businesses and families take control of how they access the Internet by offering VPN services with ultra-fast servers in 94 countries. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your Internet traffic and can protect your online identity.

Using a VPN makes it more difficult for hackers and malicious individuals to track what you’re doing online and steal your data. A VPN encrypts your Internet traffic in real time. In 2021, Kape Technologies (LSE:KAPE) acquired ExpressVPN and now the company has announced its first hardware VPN router, Aircove.

Aircove is the first and only Wi-Fi 6 router that includes a VPN straight out of the box and offers the user an interface tailored for protecting a home or business with a VPN. The same specialists who developed the company’s award-winning VPN software built and designed the router.

The Aircove router from ExpressVPN can be controlled using a smartphone and has clever features like … [+] grouping which enables up to five groups of devices to have different VPN locations.

ExpressVPN

Around 98% of all traffic from IoT devices is unencrypted, potentially leaving things like security cameras and power switches open to a cyberattack where hackers can extract personal and confidential data. Aircove is easy to set up and enables the user to protect and encrypt every device on their home network within minutes. Devices protected include smart TVs, voice assistants and other IoT devices that aren’t usually compatible with VPN software.

Aircove has a feature known as Device Groups. Users can easily drag and drop their devices into up to five groups, each with its own VPN location. For example, if you want your smart TV set to a UK location so you can access the BBC, then you can group it with other devices and designate that group as being connected to the Internet using a London server. If you need to do some mobile banking on an account in France, you can put your smartphone into a Paris group. And if you want your home printer to work with the local network, you can move it to a “No VPN” group.

The new router has been designed with user privacy and security as a top priority. For example, users can simply share their home Wi-Fi network with visitors by offering a QR code for scanning, so there’s no need to share a password. Aircove also has an auto-update feature, so users always have the latest features and security enhancements to keep their network safe and secure.

At the rear of Aircove are four Gigabit Ethernet Ports and a WAN port for connecting to the … [+] Internet.

ExpressVPN

Before the launch of Aircove, ExpressVPN invited cybersecurity firm Cure53 to conduct a penetration test and source code audit of the router. The test was conducted in June and July 2022 and Cure53 gave Aircove a first-rate security level rating.

Aircove uses Wi-Fi 6 for faster and more reliable wireless connectivity, permitting speeds up to 1,200 Mbps (600 Mbps for 2.4GHz and 1,200 Mbps for 5GHz). It also covers homes with an area of up to 1,600 square feet.

Although the Aircove router is already set up, users will also need to take out a separate annual subscription to ExpressVPN. Prices start from around $9 a month but check local pricing at the ExpressVPN website.

Pricing & Availability: ExpressVPN’s Aircove will be available on Amazon USA from today and has a special launch price of $169.
